Following the recent guidelines for the sustainable and inclusive socio-economic development of the country, Law 12/23 - the General Labour Law ("GLL") - was published on 27 December, repealing Law 7/15 of 15 June.
One of the main new features of this law is the extension of the scope of the GLL to employment contracts entered into abroad by nationals or resident foreigners employed in the country by Angolan employers. The scope of the GLL has also been extended to cover employment contracts concluded in Angola between non-resident foreigners and Angolan or foreign companies.
It is also worth noting that employment contracts are generally concluded for an indefinite period. Exceptionally, fixed-term contracts may be authorised, provided they are in writing and in the cases provided for in the new law.
The new GLL will enter into force 90 (ninety) days after its publication, i.e., on 26 March 2024.
We are currently preparing a guide to the main changes in the new law, which we hope to make available soon.
